John Freedman is a doctor and businessman, who brings a fresh, new voice to the Board of Aldermen. He won a contested four-way race in November, 2007, his first run for elective office. On the Board of Aldermen, John is Vice Chairman of the Programs and Services Committee, and a member of the Finance Committee, Post Audit and Oversight Committee, and the Special Committee on Long-Range Planning.
Educated at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Louisville, John has worked in health care for over 20 years. He practiced primary care internal medicine for 10 years, most recently at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and Boston Medical Center. Both of those organizations are leaders in providing excellent care to anyone who needs it. Prior to that, he practiced at Kaiser Permanente in Colorado, where he was the chairman of the Quality Improvement Committee for the Department of Internal Medicine. Before starting his consulting business, John was Assistant Vice President and Medical Director for Medical and Quality Management at Tufts Health Plan, which serves City of Newton employees. By the end of his service, Tufts was rated the #2 health plan in the US for quality and was an annual recipient of JD Power and Associates honors for member satisfaction. In the community, John has coached many Newton youth sports teams, particularly in Little League. He served as President of the New Art Center in Newton, which recently was given a Best-of-Boston award for its innovative gallery exhibits. In addition, John is currently on the Executive Committee of Temple Beth Avodah. John lives in south Newton. His three sons attend Newton Public Schools (two at Memorial-Spaulding and one at Oak Hill). In his free time, he enjoys skiing, golf, running, and reading. |
